The R&B Music Genre Crisis

The R&B Music Genre Crisis

If you were born in or before the 90s you probably listened to the likes of Westlife, Aaaliyah, Ashanti, Destiny’s Child and Brandy just to name a few. These musicians gave us music that stirred feelings in our hearts and gave us all kinds of feels. The R&B scene in these times are considered to have reached its peak in terms of standard and quality of music. It is not rare to log on to social media, Twitter for instance, and find someone wishing they could get the 1990s, or before, R&B, the crying-in-the-middle-of-the-road in the rain kind of music. If we are being honest with ourselves, that music was all kinds of good.

What really happened to the R&B music industry? Where did all these artists go? This is a question that is quite difficult to answer as some of the musicians that gave us this music are still very much actively involved in the music, churning hit after hit, but why is it not the same as the earlier days R&B?

Early R&B artist Erykah Badu questioned the kind of music artists from the genre were releasing in 2010 calling that style of music pop techno with the boom bip and the hump for the payday. Critics of the genre say most artists in the industry are losing the initial style of the music in the process of reinventing themselves. In the process of everyone trying to stand out with a different sound, they are ending up with absolutely different styles of music.

Other than the sound and beat, today’s R&B has become unrelatable for lack of a better word. Artists are no longer singing about what they’d do for love, or apologies or just serenading their lovers. Instead, there is a lot more music about sex, one-night stands, parties and expensive drinks on the radio today.

While there is nothing wrong with singing about sex, the difference is in how it is being done today. One cannot compare Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get it On to some of the songs about sex on the radio today without being grossed out. The message no longer has an actual, heartfelt message, it’s more superficial and meaningless. This makes it hard to connect to.  John Blake in an article for CNN commented that there is no longer tenderness or seduction in R&B music, which is sort of true.

In addition, as alluded to by Ms. Erykah Badu, artists are chasing the dollar with their music by choosing to produce club banging hits as opposed to the deep soulful music that was a characteristic of earlier days R&B. This literally leaves the music to all kinds of party themed lyrics while that doesn’t have to be the case. Whitney Houston is an example of an artist whose music topped charts with meaningful lyrics proving that it can actually be done.

The need to progress and grow in whatever genre of music cannot be understated. However, in all the change, if the message remained constant, maybe, just maybe we’d still have quality songs about love or any other emotion. It is also important to know that there some artists that have remained in the initial school of R&B showing that there is still hope.

Exploring different genres of music

Exploring different genres of music

Nothing in the world is as comforting as listening to your favorite music or to sing along your favorite song accompanied with a guitar. Once you get to know your favorite genre, you are good to go. However, usually, after people discover one particular genre that they like, they immediately start ignoring the other wonderful areas of music. Whether it is EDM, pop, Classical, Rock, Blues, or Country music, once we become used to what we like the most, it is natural to ignore the rest.

However, this approach to music often limits a budding artist or a musician. This is because exposure to different genres of music usually helps a budding musician in developing his/her own unique style. Moreover, it also allows young learning artists to widen their horizons and to figure out what genre works the best for them. Even as a listener, you could be missing out on a lot of great music without having any idea about it.

Classical Music

It would not be wrong to say that classical music is a direct and straightforward application of western music theory. Hence, anyone having a taste for classical music would have a sound knowledge of western music fundamentals which not only make music a bliss for the listener but also helps budding artists. In fact, a number of legendary musicians such as Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead received classical training in music.

Jazz

Jazz music contains quite a lot of technicalities to it. The essence of jazz music is improvisation, which comes off due to rigorous practice and the application of the fundamental jazz techniques/theory. You will often find Jazz players going off the script live so as to produce something more powerful on the go. Being able to improvise happens to be one of the major beneficial traits that jazz music players carry as it is a skill that they just develop over time.

Rock

Rock music requires a lot of power and precise timing. Hence, generally speaking, rock music performers carry a lot of energy and accuracy since this is exactly what this particular genre is built upon. Though, rock is a vast genre that consists of various sub-styles and tone. Ranging from the fast guitar shredding in a hard rock song to soft emotional licks in an acoustic rock ballad, rock offers a lot of variety to listeners and performers.

Blues

While blues music does not require as much rigorous training as jazz music does, and neither it is as intense as rock music, it is certainly tough to master. The origin of blues can be traced back to African American roots in the southern states. Blues music heavily relies on rhythm and distinct blues scales that give it is particular feel. Hence, blues musicians happen to have a great command of rhythm that could easily separate them from the rest.

Reggae

Reggae music is based upon the off-beat playing. Accents in Reggae music follow the downbeat and the 2nd and 4th notes instead of 1st and 3rd notes. This results in a syncopated sound which is the essence of this particular genre. Reggae music carries inspiration from various other genres especially blues and jazz.

Should The Big Five Be Disbanded? You Decide!

Should The Big Five Be Disbanded? You Decide!

Eurovision is a widely viewed international musical contest where some of the countries musical talents participate in a contest to determine who’s the best. It’s almost like the Olympics, but with music rather than various sports.

Of course something this widely popular and watched has it’s own line of controversies. But one of the big ones other there is something called the Big Five. Today we will be looking at the controversy and raising points for and against the disbanded or not.

Reasons Against Disbandment

First let’s take a look at what this rule actually entails as a lot of the arguments for that stem from this rule being in place. This rule is in place to bring five countries: UK, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France into the finals of this competition regardless of their standing overall in the competition.

On the surface it sounds completely unfair, however it’s important to note that Italy didn’t participate for 13 years before joining back on regularly every year. Furthermore the other four countries are the largest backers of Eurovision. Essentially without these countries involved, Eurovision wouldn’t be as lucrative, or as massive as it is now.

This rule is put in place as a sort of incentive in the end. For Italy, being part of the Big 5 is more of a “thank you for coming back” gift. After all, it would dampen anyones mood if this was the first time they joined the contest in a long time only to fall short and not participate in the contest fully. For the other four it’s due to the amount of money they put in. A lot of times you only need a small glimmer of winning as a good incentive to invest.

Another thing to keep in mind with this rule is since this rule has been in place there’s been only one winner from the Big 5 since the year 2000. As much as it’s a big advantage it’s also fair since the other performers still have good chances if not the same chance as the other competitors.

Reasons For Disbandment

Reasons for disbanding the Big 5 is also prominent as well and there are many good points for disbanding the Big 5. The first of which is looking at consumer engagement. For most users watching from outside the event they will more than likely be watching during the semis that are held. They wouldn’t care much about what led up to that. What’s also important to note is the Big 5’s musician of choice only performs during the finals. There’s certainly promotion done during the semis, but no live performances until the actual finals.

Because of this, a voter will more than likely be swayed to vote for a semi-final content who made it to the finals rather than someone who was already in the Big 5. This can explain why out of the years this rule is in place, only one instance has a Big 5 member actually won the contest.

Another thing to note is also the countries choice in band to send as well. Because the Big 5 are guaranteed a spot it means they can send anyone they like. In many instances the fans have noticed that the Big 5 tend to serve up bands that aren’t as great as the other countries participants. It’s fair to say that because of this particular status it’s led the Big 5 to get comfortable with sending bands only for exposure rather than putting a quality performance and winning.

Because of this fact it makes sense to disband as the Big 5 have no distinct advantage and use this rule as a means of sending lower quality performers. They also gimp themselves because the band doesn’t perform until the end of the week in the finals.

What Are Your Thoughts?

Each side has it’s own good cases to keep the Big 5 or to disband it, but let’s hear your thoughts below on the subject! What do you think they should do? Should they keep it? Disband it? Or maybe make some changes to the rule?

4 Best Pop Songs of 2017

4 Best Pop Songs of 2017

Although we are halfway into 2018 and there’s been certainly some amazing music that has come out, we shouldn’t immediately dismiss songs from last year. There were a lot of catchy tunes that caught our attention so let’s walk down memory lane to a not so distant past and point out some quality tunes.

Cardi B – “Bodak Yellow”

Cardi B

Let’s start off with a song that has done some incredible stuff. Not only did Cardi B’s song top the pop charts last year, it knocked down the Queen of Pop from that comfortable position. Not only that, but it’s been almost 20 years since a female rapper managed to nab a number one song since Lauryn Hill’s work in 1998.

It makes sense though that this song made it to the top. Cardi B has amassed a lot of fans on Instagram from her personality and her overall tonne that’s taken in this song. Not bad for a first time female rapper.

Dua Lipa – “New Rules”

4 Best Pop Songs of 2017

This singer came out of the blue last year with launching her debut and making impressive sales along with scoring tours with both Coldplay and Bruno Mars. These days, her popularity is so massive that the singer is embarking on her own tour. The reason she’s pulled this off and more is primarily from this song that is both mournful but oddly upbeat as well. The timing of this song though was perfect as it came around the time where not many people felt there wasn’t much to be happy about. Pay attention to the lyrics as there’s plenty of valuable life lessons in there.

NERD ft. Rihanna – “Lemon”

NERD ft. Rihanna

You know those songs that when you hear the opening notes, you want to play this on repeat? Right? Yeah this song is one of those ones. With lines that we can connect with and that killer beat that hits you like you’re in the middle of some dizzyingly lit club, no wonder this song is a good song and you’ll hear it all over the place.

Carly Rae Jepsen – “Cut to the Feeling”

Carly Rae Jepsen

Literally pop music at the purest form. The album Carly Rae Jepsen released, Emotion, was THE album that stars like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga have strived to make and are still trying to make. Overall the songs are smart and are almost pulled from some bubblegum lab if it wasn’t stuffed to the brim with great tastes. One song that caught our attention from the album is “Cut to the Feeling” which gives off some serious 80’s vibes and makes you want to dance like you just don’t care. Take a listen to this album and just let Jepsen take you to a magical world where there are no problems at all.

Conclusion

As you can tell, there were many great songs that have come out last year that are well worth looking into. Just because there were certainly some low points in pop music from big hits like Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, and others, this low point has brought some amazing stars up into the limelight and release some great songs. Definitely check them out.

The Changing Face of Pop Music

It is undeniable to admit that pop music is changing with the times. Despite the genre being around since the 1950’s and having iconic artists such as Prince, Madonna, and the Beatles set the scene – newer artists in 2018 are rising in popularity and changing the face of pop music due to their energetic personalities and unique ways they’re approaching their music.

Pop music doesn’t have a defined music genre it follows. Instead, it’s a term that is used in reference to some of the most popular hits that are featured globally. It can range from country, rock, or even hip-hop/RNB. However, in today’s time, pop music is constantly changing, and the artists are the main reason why.

Artists

Since around 2010, rising pop artists have begun to develop more unique quirks and personalities to promote themselves and their music. To put it simply, to have music be considered pop music, artists had to start thinking out of the box to have people drawn into their music, no matter the genre.

One of the first modern-day artists, Nicki Minaj, incorporated this idea fully, which incidentally lead to her overall success of having 16 of her singles, and featured songs, appearing on Billboard’s top 50 lists on multiple occasions. However, her main reason of success, other than her music, is derived from her personal uniqueness. She was known for her overall colourful style and her unapologetic behaviour of not meeting the norms. Though, she has not been the only artist who have done this. If you can recall, Lady Gaga has been known to incorporate the same behaviour, even going as far as to call her fans “Little Monsters”. While these acts may be seen as unimportant, popular pop artists have been doing this for years – the only difference is that modern artists are pushing the boundaries of adding their own unique flair.

Now in 2018, it is almost impossible to find a pop artist that doesn’t have their own unique personality. For example, Taylor Swift is known as the sweet singer who music is based off on her personal life, while Cardi B is known as the unapologetic women from the Bronx who has risen to success because of her outgoing personality that is shown through her lyrics.

While pop music will always have it classic roots that were set by great artists in the 1950’s through the 1980’s, the new wave of pop artists are changing the history of pop in a favourable way. While still giving their respects to the iconic pop legends that helped set the foundation of the genre many decades ago.

Social Media

When pop music was becoming popularized in the 1950’s, artists did not have social media to help promote their music and gain their followings. However, in more recent years, social media platforms have been used by artists to connect with their fans while showing their upcoming music as well. Some of the more popular social media platforms: Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube – are used by artists of all ages and genres, and it’s been shown on multiple occasions that this advancement in technology has affected pop music on a large scale. These platforms have helped artists generate exposure to show who they truly are, which is a known factor in how they became such well-known pop artists in the first place.

As of 2018, the numbers show that pop music is constantly changing and shows no signs of slowing down in the upcoming years. While more artists are being their unique and authentic selves and using social media platforms to promote themselves and their music – pop music is bound to become a concept that everyone, no matter the genre they prefer, can appreciate globally.
